In order to improve electricity supply in the country, the federal government has promised to generate 7,000 Mega Watt of electricity before the end of the year, Minister of State for Power, Mohammed Wakil, has disclosed.
This is as the Ministry of Power launched its pilot scheme of community protection against power and installations vandalism in Ogori-Magongo Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The minister explained that the federal government was doing everything within its power to make sure that Nigerians enjoy stable electricity all years round, but noted that due to vandalism of powerlines and installations across the country, the government is finding it difficult to provide the much needed electricity for its citizens.
According to him, “Due to the activities of vandals, the expected mega watts that we are supposed to generate has even dropped below 4,000 MW as at today and we have realised that we cannot achieve much success without the cooperation of the people at the grassroots who live where most of these power installations are located, we can’t achieve the need mega walts.
He added: “This is the major reason why we have to engage the people living at the rural areas where most of our installations are located to assist us in checking the activities of vandals. By so doing, our equipment will be safe and protected and that is when government can also fulfil its promise of generating more mega watts needed in the country.”
Wakils added that the ministry of power decided to use Ogori as its pilot scheme based on a research conducted across the country which clearly showed that Ogori community was one of the most peaceful communities in the country and that the people are ever ready to protect and guard government projects located in their community.
In order to achieve success in the community protection scheme, the minister said the ministry would partner with the National Orientation Agency (NOA) which has the capacity to reach out to all villages and communities in the country.
